ORLANDO, Fla. -- Tiger Woods began play Thursday looking for his second straight title at Bay Hill and his third victory of 2013.

The seven-time champion of the Arnold Palmer Invitational wasn't leading after the first round, but he's within striking distance after an opening-round 3-under 69. Woods trails leader Justin Rose (7 under) by four shots.

Other notable results include Phil Mickelson's 73, Brandt Snedeker's 76 and Webb Simpson's 80.

Hole No. 9: Par 4, 474 yards

Last hole for Woods today. He won't catch Justin Rose today unless something crazy happens, but he could very well enter the clubhouse in a tie for second with a birdie here.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger hits driver, but misses in the right rough. He finds the green with the approach, but misses the 25-footer for birdie. He makes par to wrap up a 3-under 69.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under

Elsewhere on the course: Justin Rose is the clubhouse leader after his 7-under 65.

• • •

Hole No. 8: Par 4, 460 yards

That bogey ends a stretch of three straight birdies for Tiger. Meanwhile, Justin Rose, playing with Woods, is putting together an impressive round with just two holes left.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger opts for 5-wood and finds another fairway. He finds the green, too, but has a 40-plus-footer for birdie. He lags it to about a foot and makes par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under

Elsewhere on the course: In his last five rounds, Jason Dufner only has one round under par. He's 2 under through 17 holes today.

• • •

Hole No. 7: Par 3, 199 yards

Tiger went 5 under on the par 5s today. That's pretty good. He's 1 over through the first three par 3s, though.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under

Elsewhere on the course: Justin Rose birdies No. 7 and he is three shots clear of the field at 7 under.

• • •

Hole No. 6: Par 5, 555 yards

Tiger is heating up with a second straight birdie. Lots of water on this hole with tee shots having to carry the lake on the left.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger sends driver over the water and safely into the fairway. He goes for the green in two and carries the green a tad. He then hits a great flop shot to about 5 feet and makes the birdie.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 4 under

Elsewhere on the course: Tiger is two shots back of leader Justin Rose, who birdie No. 6, as well, to move to 6 under.

• • •

Hole No. 5: Par 4, 390 yards

That was just what Tiger needed, as he looks to finish that last third of his round strong.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger chooses iron and finds the middle of the fairway. He then lands his approach on the green. He has about a 20-footer for birdie and he makes it. Two birdies in a row.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under

Elsewhere on the course: Justin Rose birdies No. 5 to tie John Rollins for the lead at 5 under.

• • •

Hole No. 4: Par 5, 561 yards

Tiger needs to get going again and he'll have a good chance with this par 5. Remember, Tiger eagled his previous par 5 today. The weather is warming up in Orlando. Can Tiger follow suit?

Hole wrap-up: Tiger pounds driver down the left side of the fairway. He then lays up with iron. That ends up being a good play as he sticks his third close and makes birdie.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under

Elsewhere on the course: Tiger is three shots back of leader John Rollins, who is 5 under through 14 holes.

• • •

Hole No. 3: Par 4, 434 yards

Tiger has made a couple nice par saves in a row to avoid even more trouble.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger goes with 3-wood and hits into the fairway. His approach lands a little past the hole, setting up a birdie attempt from about 12 feet. He two-putts for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under

Elsewhere on the course: The lead is still 3 under, but some big names are at 1 under, including Tiger, Rickie Fowler, Jason Dufner and Ian Poulter.

• • •

Hole No. 2: Par 3, 231 yards

That last putt was big for Tiger, who made par at No. 1 to avoid a third straight bogey.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger's tee shot misses the green, finding the rough just outside of a greenside bunker. He chips to a few feet and makes par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under

Elsewhere on the course: Robert Garrigus is 7 over through nine holes. He's struggled since he made a little run at Match Play last month.

• • •

Hole No. 1: Par 4, 461 yards

Back-to-back bogeys for Woods, who is struggling since his eagle at No. 16. He totaled 15 putts through his first nine holes, and that included three one-putts.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger finds rough with 3-wood off the tee. He has a bad lie and can't find the green with his approach. His third ends up about 10 feet away. He gets this par putt to drop, though. Nice save.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under

Elsewhere on the course: Five guys tied for the lead at 3 under right now, including Justin Rose and Sean O'Hair.

• • •

Hole No. 18: Par 4, 458 yards

Tiger heads into his ninth hole of the day coming off his first bogey of the round.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger misses the fairway and then leaves his approach short. His chip ends up about 5 feet away and can't make par. Another disappointing bogey for Woods.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under

Elsewhere on the course: Rickie Fowler has worked his way to 1 under. He was 1 over after two holes, but two birdie in his last four holes has helped him get into red numbers.

• • •

Hole No. 17: Par 3, 221 yards

That was a huge eagle for Tiger, who now leads the field by a shot heading into his second to last hole before the turn. He stuck his tee shot close at the previous par 3, but couldn't get the birdie to drop.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger's tee shot finds a greenside bunker. He can't get up-and-down for par and he drops a shot after making bogey.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 2 under

Elsewhere on the course: While Tiger drops a shot, Justin Rose makes birdie at No. 17 to move into the solo lead at 3 under.

• • •

Hole No. 16: Par 5, 511 yards

Tiger has missed a couple good birdie opportunities, but he's avoided trouble so far today. He made birdie at his first par 5 of the day after sending his second shot way left.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger goes with driver for just the second time today, sending it deep down the fairway. That drive leads him a mid-iron into the green and Tiger takes advantage, leaving himself a 15-footer for eagle. He drills it and gives his first fist pump of the day.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 3 under

Elsewhere on the course: Tiger now has a one-shot lead on a group of four guys tied for second: Ryo Ishikawa, John Rollins, Justin Rose and Geoff Ogilvy.

• • •

Hole No. 15: Par 4, 429 yards

That last miss hurts a little, but Tiger is still moving along nicely. He's still just one back of the lead heading into yet another non-driver par 4.

Hole wrap-up: It's 5-wood for Tiger off the tee and he finds the fairway. He then delivers his best approach so far today, stopping his ball about 12 feet from the hole. He misses another good look at birdie, though, rolling it past the hole. He makes par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under

Elsewhere on the course: Pat Perez bogeys No. 8 to drop back to 1 under, as Ryo Ishikawa now assumes the solo lead. He's 2 under through seven holes.

• • •

Hole No. 14: Par 3, 215 yards

That last birdie putt by Tiger wasn't his best, but he's playing smart right now. Also, he's only used driver once today, and he won't use one here as he gets the first par 3 of the round.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger sticks his tee shot close, but misses the 10-footer for birdie just left.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under

Elsewhere on the course: Pat Perez is your solo leader at 2 under through seven holes.

• • •

Hole No. 13: Par 4, 370 yards

Tiger has two one-putts through three holes and has saved himself from trouble on a couple occasions. He'll get the shortest par 4 on the course now.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger hits iron off the tee and has his ball roll just off the fairway. Tiger follows by finding a third straight green in regulation. He leaves his birdie try from about 30 feet a few feet short and he settles for par.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under

Elsewhere on the course: Tiger's playing competitor, Ernie Els, is 3 over through four holes. Also, Rickie Fowler and Lee Westwood are both 1 over early in their rounds.

• • •

Hole No. 12: Par 5, 574 yards

First par 5 of the day and Tiger will want to take advantage after somewhat of a slow start.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger opts for driver for the first time today and powers it down the fairway. He decides to go for the green in two, but pulls it left near the next tee box. He finds the green with his next shot, though, and has about 25 feet for birdie. He gives his birdie putt a great roll and it drops.

TIGER ON THE DAY: 1 under

Elsewhere on the course: Tiger's birdie puts him in a tie for lead with six others, including Ian Poulter and Trevor Immelman.

• • •

Hole No. 11: Par 4, 438 yards

After a couple of average shots, both off the tee and on the approach, Tiger saves himself with his third from off the back of the green. Not a bad start for Woods, who will head to a second straight non-driver par 4.

Hole wrap-up: This one is too short for driver, too, as Tiger hits 5-wood into fairway. Tiger finds his first green of the day, but he'll have a long birdie try. From about 35 feet, Tiger gives this one a good roll, but it misses. Another par after a good lag from Woods.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even

Elsewhere on the course: Greg Owen, Ryo Ishikawa and John Rollins have all moved to 1 under and into a three-way tie for the top spot.

• • •

Hole No. 10: Par 4, 400 yards

Tiger is wearing all black this morning. He'll be starting on the back nine, playing with Ernie Els and Justin Rose.

Hole wrap-up: Tiger goes with fairway wood off the tee and finds a fairway bunker. He had to back off the shot once after a camera shutter clicked in his backswing. He has a decent lie in the sand, but flies the green just slightly. His third shot from the back fringe ends up within a couple feet and Tiger makes the easy par putt.

TIGER ON THE DAY: Even

Elsewhere on the course: At the moment Tiger teed off at No. 10, there were no players under par. Ten guys, including Boo Weekley and Matt Every, were part of a 10-way tie for the lead at even par.
