Mickelson shot a 1-over 73 on Saturday, while Watney closed with a 1-under 71. Both players struggled late in the round. Mickelson finished double bogey-bogey-par-par. Watney, who shanked his tee shot on No. 17, scored a double bogey.

One-shot back is George McNeill at 7 under after shooting an even-par 72. In a six-way tie for fourth at 6 under are: Lee Westwood, John Senden, Ryan Moore, Robert Karlsson, David Lynn and Derek Ernst.

See how it all unfolded on Saturday at the Wells Fargo Championship.

Update No. 40: 5:56 p.m.

Phil Mickelson, finishing up in the last group, finds the bunker off the tee. He takes it clean out of the bunker, but way short of the green. He leaves himself with a good look at the flagstick. A good chip shot from Phil, 30 yards out, leaves him with a 8 footer below the hole. He finds the center of the cup, and he'll be the 54-hole co-leader with Nick Watney heading into Sunday.

• • •

Update No. 39: 5:46 p.m.

Co-leader Phil Mickelson two-putts No. 17 for par and maintains a share of the lead after going double bogey-bogey on Nos. 15 & 16, respectively.

Nick Watney finishing up on the 18th puts it down the fairway allowing him to fire at the pin and it lands just over the flagstick. He misses his birdie attempt from 20 feet and settles for par on No. 18 to finish at 1-under 71 on the day, and 8 under for the tournament.

George McNeill found the left rough off the tee. He had to take a 5-iron from the rough, but it still squirted to the right of the green. He pitches it on and it rolls about 20 feet by the hole. McNeill can't convert on his par attempt, as he leaves it short. It drops him 7 under for the tournament, one-shot back of the lead.

• • •

Update No. 38: 5:33 p.m.

After his wait on the 17th tee, leader Nick Watney blocks the ball out to the right, leaving spectators peering around the grandstand. Watney's ball requires a drop from a cart path, and his resulting lie is on a steep slope. His second shot stops short of the green and leaves him with a long up-and-down attempt from the fringe. Watney's bogey putt slides by, dropping him to 8 under and into a three-way tie for the lead that includes playing partner George McNeill, who pars the hole.

Phil Mickelson's errant shot one hole back apparently caught the head of a spectator who's being bandaged up. His second shot fails to clear a berm separating the 16th green from the 17th tee, but his third rolls to within about two feet. Mickelson makes his bogey putt to drop to 8 under, tied for the lead.

• • •

Update No. 37: 5:21 p.m.

Leader Nick Watney, waiting to hit on No. 17 has two holes left and has yet to make a bogey on Quail Hollow's back nine, with its vaunted "Green Mile," this week. At the same time, his birdies today at Nos. 10-11 double his previous total for the week.

Phil Mickelson remains erratic tee-to-green, missing the No. 16 green wide as his ball came to rest on one of the tee boxes at No. 17.

• • •

Update No. 36: 5:05 p.m.

After using a wood from the rough and hitting his second shot on No. 15 out of bounds, Phil Mickelson takes a drop that finds the cart path, then re-drops. He then hits his fourth shot short of the bunker that guards the front of the green. With the pin toward the front, he'll need to get up and down for bogey. He pitches to about 5 feet and the putt lips out. His double-bogey 7 drops him to 9 under, where he began the day.

• • •

Update No. 36: 4:52 p.m.

Nick Watney has about a 7-footer for birdie on No. 15, but it's low all the way and never has a chance. He taps in to remain 10 under, one shot back of Phil Mickelson – who has found trouble along a cart path on the same hole and apparently will consult a rules official.

At the other end of the leaderboard, Kevin Chappell, Justin Hicks and Trevor Immelman have carded the day's high round at 78.

• • •

Update No. 35: 4:38 p.m.

Phil Mickelson moves back into the lead with a birdie at the 14th that returns him to 11 under. He's one ahead of Nick Watney, who parred the 14th in the group ahead.

George McNeill birdied the 14th to move within a shot of playing partner Watney at 9 under. Derek Ernst and Kevin Streelman are another two shots back, Streelman having birdied the 16th.

• • •

Update No. 34: 4:23 p.m.

A bogey at the 12th drops Phil Mickelson into a tie for the lead again, then makes par at the 13th. Nick Watney has back-to-back pars at the 12th and 13th to remain at 10 under.

• • •

Update No. 34: 4:04 p.m.

Phil Mickelson wedges to about 30 feet with his approach on the par-4 11th and his birdie attempt slides by just on the low side. His short, downhill comebacker finds the cup.

Rory McIlroy bogeys again, this time at the 12th, and falls to 1 over for the day.

• • •

Update No. 33: 3:57 p.m.

Nick Watney isn't letting leader Phil Mickelson pull away – he birdies the par-4 11th to get to 10 under and pull within a shot of the lead again.

Watney's playing partner, George McNeill, has a chance to keep pace but misses a birdie putt of about 12 feet, leaving it short and staying in third at 8 under.

Rory McIlroy bogeys again, this time at the par-4 11th, and again drops to 6 under for the week.

• • •

Update No. 32: 3:51 p.m.

Nick Watney pulls back within a shot of leader Phil Mickelson, pitching close on the par-5 10th and making his short birdie putt.

Mickelson pars the 9th to remain at 10 under. He then reaches a greenside bunker in two on the 10th and gets up and down for birdie to reclaim his two-shot margin.

Jordan Spieth gets a much-needed eagle on the par-5 15th, getting him to 2 over for the day.

• • •

Update No. 31: 3:42 p.m.

Rory McIlroy birdies the par-5 10th to get back to 7 under, three back of leader Phil Mickelson as when he started the day.

Further down the leaderboard, Sergio Garcia birdies the 15th to get to 5 under for the week, 1 under for the day.

• • •

Update No. 30: 3:23 p.m.

Phil Mickelson moves back into the lead alone with a birdie at the short, par-4 8th, wedging his second shot to about 10 feet and sinking the putt to move to 10 under.

Nick Watney bogeys the 9th to fall another shot back, T-2 at 8 under with George McNeill.

Despite the soft greens that Mickelson cited yesterday as allowing aggressive play, only seven of the 50-plus rounds today have been under 70.

Robert Karlsson, however, is looking good to break 70. He birdies the 14th and 15th to get to 7 under and T-4, 4 under for the day.

• • •

Update No. 29: 3:12 p.m.

Nick Watney pulls into a share of the lead with a birdie at the 8th, hitting it to about 3 feet on his approach and getting to 9 under. Co-leader Phil Mickelson pars the par-5 7th. They're a shot ahead of Scott Gardiner and George McNeill.

Rory McIlroy slides back to 6 under after missing a par putt of about 18 feet and then his bogey attempt.

• • •

Update No. 28: 3:03 p.m.

Rory McIlroy holds steady with a par at the 8th, one shot back of leader Phil Mickelson, who pars the 6th.

George McNeill – who nearly aced the par-3 17th yesterday, settling instead for a 2-inch birdie tap-in – moves to 8 under with a birdie at the 7th, his third in a row after back-to-back bogeys on the 3rd and 4th.

• • •

Update No. 27: 2:54 p.m.

John Senden has the day's low round in the clubhouse, wrapping up his 67 with a bogey-birdie-par sequence after birdieing five of his first 11 holes. He heads in at 6 under for the week, good for T-9.

Sergio Garcia gets back to even for his round with a birdie at the 10th and follows with a par at the 11th. Playing partner Jordan Spieth is off to a good start for his back nine with two straight birdies, a kickstart he needs after going 5 over on the front nine.

• • •

Update No. 26: 2:46 p.m.

Phil Mickelson reclaims the lead, moving to 9 under with a birdie at the par-4 5th. The bird keeps him a shot ahead of Rory McIlroy, who eagles the par-5 7th and moves into T-2 with Scott Gardiner and Nick Watney. Derek Ernst falls to 7 under with a bogey at the 8th; he's T-5 with George McNeill, Ryan Moore and Lee Westwood.

• • •

Update No. 25: 2:37 p.m.

The lead is shared by four as Derek Ernst birdies the 7th and Nick Watney birdies the 5th to move to 8 under alongside Phil Mickelson and Scott Gardiner.

• • •

Update No. 24: 2:29 p.m.

Phil Mickelson finds trouble off the 4th tee, then misses the green with a well-struck recovery shot. He pitches on and makes his putt for a scrambling par, while co-leader Scott Gardiner two-putts for par and the two remain co-leaders at 8 under.

Rory McIlroy returns to even par for the day with a bogey at the par-5 5th, only his second bogey of the week on the front nine at Quail Hollow. He follows with a par at the par-3 6th and is 6 under, two back of the lead and among five golfers a shot back of Derek Ernst and Nick Watney.

• • •

Update No. 23: 2:14 p.m.

Rory McIlroy joins the group at 7 under with a birdie at the 4th, tied with Derek Ernst and Nick Watney.

• • •

Update No. 22: 2:02 p.m.

Scott Gardiner birdies the first and follows with a par to move within a shot of playing partner and leader Phil Mickelson, who remains 9 under. Nick Watney bogeys the second to drop back to 7 under where he began the day.

Bo Van Pelt matches John Merrick for the day's low round, closing his 68 with three pars after a birdie-bogey-birdie at the 13th through 15th.

• • •

Update No. 21: 1:47 p.m.

Nick Watney cuts the lead to one with a birdie at the first, pulling away from four others at 7 under as leader Phil Mickelson tees off and finds the first fairway.

Defending champ Rickie Fowler, meanwhile, has ended his round with a pair of pars for 77, falling to T-73 as he heads to the clubhouse.

• • •

Update No. 20: 1:28 p.m.

2010 Wells Fargo champ Rory McIlroy begins his birthday round with a drive into the right-side fairway bunker. Surely the year can only get better from there? Perhaps so, as he finds the green from there.

Webb Simpson takes a double bogey at the 18th; after being as low as 4 under on the day, he cards a 71 and heads to the clubhouse at T-36.

• • •

• • •

• • •

Update No. 17: 12:36 p.m.

Webb Simpson, who had one of the day's lowest rounds going, gives a couple of shots back with bogeys at the 12th and 14th. But he birdies the par-5 15th to recover a bit and get back to 3 under for the day and the week.

He wouldn't be the only one to slip late: Josh Teater and Ryo Ishikawa were both 4 under at some point for the day and signed for 71s. Teater is even for the week, Ishikawa 1 over.

• • •

Update No. 16: 12:21 p.m.

Ryan Moore rises to T-5 with the fourth birdie of his first five holes today. He's among six golfers at 6 under, a group that includes Rory McIlroy, who tees off in about an hour. Moore, a two-time Tour winner, is looking to improve on his season-best finish of fourth in Phoenix.

• • •

• • •

Update No. 14: 11:56 a.m.

• • •

Update No. 9: 10:39 a.m.

Geoff Ogilvy joins the players who are 3 under so far today, notching a birdie at the 10th. Ogilvy started with a bogey and has scattered four birdies since to get to 1 under overall. The Aussie's best finish this season is second at the Honda Classic in March.

• • •

Update No. 1: 9:04 a.m.

It's a long and winding road for Tommy Gainey so far – he's 1 under through seven holes and yet to card a par. Gainey birdied the first two holes, then gave both back with bogeys at the 3rd and 4th. He then birdied the par-5 5th and 7th holes, with a bogey sandwiched between them. Interesting front nine, for sure.
