After the first round of the John T. Lupton Memorial, Paul Simson is in a familiar position.

Simson, the only player in history to hold the British, Canadian and American senior amateur titles in the same year, totaled 35 points Saturday to take the lead at the Honors Course in Ooltewah, Tenn.

The Lupton Memorial is made up of 54 of the world’s top senior amateur golfers, including Chip Lutz, Mike Jenkins and Ron Carter. Currently all three sit in a tie for second place with 32 points each.

Lutz, winner of the 2011 ans '12 British Senior Amateurs, is only the third player in history to record back-to-back victories in that event.

The 54-hole stroke-play tournament is conducted using the stableford scoring system in which points are awarded based on hole score: zero points for a double bogey, one for a bogey, two for a par, three for a birdie and four for an eagle.

John T Lupton, founder of The Honors Course created it “to honor” amateur golf. Since its founding in 1983, the Honors Course has hosted some of the most prestigious events in amateur golf, including the USGA Men’s Amateur and Mid-Amateur Championships, the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship along with the Curtis Cup and the NCAA Men’s Division I Championships.

Past champion Brady Exber said: "You could just sit on the clubhouse porch and have the time of your life soaking in the beauty of this place.”
