Graphite iron shafts received a boost at the Crowne Plaza Invitational as Boo Weekley won with Aldila RIP Tour prototype graphite shafts in his Cleveland irons (588 MB, 4-PW). His victory with graphite iron shafts was particularly noteworthy because accurate iron play is the hallmark of Weekley’s game.

The rest of his mixed bag: TaylorMade R1 driver (10 degree, with a Fujikura Motore VC 6.1 X shaft), TaylorMade RBZ 3-wood (15 degree, with Aldila RIP X shaft), TaylorMade RBZ Tour hybrid (21.5 degree, with Matrix Ozik Altus X shaft), Cleveland 588 RTX wedges (52, 56 and 60 degree, with True Temper Dynamic Gold Tour Issue S400 shafts), Odyssey Versa 2-Ball putter. He played a TaylorMade Lethal golf ball.

Also worth noting is the 10-degree loft of Weekley’s TaylorMade R1 driver. Many PGA Tour players use higher lofts in their drivers.

Manassero wins with Titleist, Project X: In Europe, Matteo Manassero won the BMW PGA Championship with Project X PXi steel shafts in his Titleist irons and Project X graphite HC1 in two Titleist hybrids.

The rest of Manassero’s bag: 913D2 driver (8.5 degree), 913F fairway wood (13.5 degree), 913H hybrids (17 and 21 degree), AP2 irons (4-6), MB irons (7-PW), Vokey Design SM4 wedges (52 and 58 degree), Scotty Cameron GoLo 5 putter. He played a Pro V1x golf ball.

Are two 3-irons better than one?: There was a time when Fred Couples carried two 8-irons because they had different lofts and went different distances. At the Crowne Plaza, Martin Laird had two 3-irons in his bag: a TaylorMade Tour Preferred 08 model (which he used this year in winning the Valero Texas Open) and a new Tour Preferred CB 3-iron. The CB flies higher and lands softer, while the 08 has a more penetrating trajectory.

Short shots: Ilhee Lee won her first LPGA title, the Pure Silk-Bahamas LPGA Classic, with a yellow Volvik golf ball. In the past nine LPGA events, players using Volvik colored golf balls have earned six top-5 finishes and nine top 10s. . . . Y.E. Yang, seeking fresh grooves, played a new set of TaylorMade RocketBladez irons with Project X 6.0 steel shafts. Yang, who typically carries four hybrids in his bag, has no iron longer than a 6-iron, so his new set was 6-PW. . . . Aaron Baddeley played a new Adams Super DHy hybrid (18 degree), the first time the Australian player has used a hybrid club outside of the Open Championship. . . . The specs for Jim Furyk’s new Callaway Razr Fit Xtreme 5-wood at Colonial: 16.2 degree, 42 1/8 inches and 2-inch tipping on a Fujikura Speeder VC 8.1 X shaft. . . . Scott Brown and Kevin Chappell each added a Nike VR_S Covert 5-wood (15 degree) at the Crowne Plaza Invitational. At the BMW PGA Championship, Oliver Wilson did the same.
