The NCAA Championship's match-play quarterfinals kicked off this morning at the Capital City Club's Crabapple course, with some intriguing match-ups all over the course.

Pac-12 rivals Cal and Arizona State facing off, with the No. 1-ranked Bears emerging victorious and advancing to the semifinals.

Illinois took on defending champion Texas and pulled out a win to move on; the Illini and Bears will meet tomorrow.

Host Georgia Tech needed a playoff to rise above a challenge from UNLV and continue play in the suburbs of the Yellow Jackets' home city.

And Alabama disposed of New Mexico in convincing fashion as the Crimson Tide will take on the host team tomorrow.

Update on Georgia Tech vs. UNLV: In their playoff, UNLV's Kevin Penner misses the hole on his third shot, a chip; Ollie Schneiderjans makes his putt to win the match on the first extra hole. Georgia Tech advances past UNLV with a 3-2 team score.

So the semifinals are set and four conferences are represented: An all-southeast showdown between Alabama of the SEC and Georgia Tech of the ACC on one side, No. 1 Cal of the Pac-12 facing Illinois of the Big Ten in the other.

Update on Alabama vs. New Mexico: Bama's Bobby Wyatt misses a 6-footer to close out his match and clinch a semifinal berth for the Tide, but New Mexico's Victor Perez then also misses his putt and Wyatt wins 2 & 1. Alabama advances with three wins officially on the board.

Update on Georgia Tech vs. UNLV: On their first playoff hole, Tech's Ollie Schneiderjans hits it to within 5 feet; UNLV's Kevin Penner finds the green but the ball spins back off the putting surface and leaves him with about a 15-foot chip.

Update on Alabama vs. New Mexico: The Crimson Tide pick up a second point as Scott Strohmayer defeats Benjamin Bauch 4 & 3. Bama is up 2-1 and leads its other two matches as well.

Update on Georgia Tech vs. UNLV: The Yellow Jackets' Anders Albertson closes out his win over Kurt Kitayama on the 17th hole to officially pull his team even with the Rebels at 2-2. The semifinal berth hinges on the playoff between GT's Ollie Schneiderjans and UNLV's Kevin Penner.

If UNLV's Kevin Penner or Georgia Tech's Ollie Schneiderjans can win the 18th hole, it likely sends that man's team to the semifinals. With the stakes high, Penner hits to about 25 feet, and Schneiderjans to about 12. Penner misses his putt to set up a potential winning birdie putt for Schneiderjans – which does not fall. Penner makes his par and concedes Schneiderjans' putt, sending their match to extra holes.

UNLV's Kevin Penner pulls all square with Georgia Tech's Ollie Schneiderjans as Penner makes a long birdie to win the hole on No. 17 – the teams are knotted up with each having earned a point, each leading a match and these two players square.

UNLV's A.J. McInerney puts the Rebels second point on the board after opponent Shun-Yat Hak concedes the final hole after failing to hit the green in regulation, and UNLV takes a 2-1 lead, although the last two matches are 1 up in favor of Georgia Tech.

Georgia Tech's Ollie Schneiderjans drains a 4-footer for par on the par-3 15th to halve the hole with Kevin Penner and keep his 1-up lead.

Meanwhile, UNLV's A.J. McInerney two-putts for par on 17 to maintain a 1-up lead over Tech's Shun Yat Hak, who makes a beautiful recovery from right of the green to save par.

California's Max Homa claims the NCAA Individual Championship

California's Max Homa claimed the NCAA individual championship with a bogey-free 4-under 66 in the final round at The Capital City Club's Crabapple course. He is the first Golden Bear to win the individual title.
