Scheffler leads U.S. to victory at Spirit International

Scott Scheffler

The U.S. managed to hold off France and win the Spirit International team competition on Sunday as Scott Scheffler made six birdies over the final nine holes. It’s the third consecutive gold medal for the U.S. in the overall team division and the fourth since The Spirit’s inception in 2001.

The U.S. team finished the weather-shortened event at Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas, with a 33-under 399 for 54 holes. Aside from Scheffler, U.S. team members included Jordan Niebrugge, an Oklahoma State junior; Ally McDonald, a Mississippi State junior and Ashlan Ramsey, a Clemson freshman. Scheffler is a 17 -year-old Texas commit.

“It feels great,” said Scheffler. “We were really struggling in the morning, but some putts started dropping. That really freed up the rest of our games and allowed us to play aggressively. To win gold here means a lot. It’s what we set out to do.”

The U.S. also won gold in the men’s team division as Scheffler and Niebrugge were 22 under for the championship. Finland and Sweden tied for second at 16 under. France won the women’s division at 12 under and the U.S. was next.

“We are so excited,” France team member Mathilda Cappeliez said, also speaking for teammate Eva Gilley. “We’re only 15 years old, so we don’t have much experience. We just wanted to come here, have fun and enjoy the experience. Winning the gold is beyond our expectations.”

Frenchman Julien Brun, a junior at TCU, won a playoff in the men’s individual division, a competition based on most birdies. Brun, Finland’s Tony Hakula and both U.S. players qualified for the playoff with 14 birdies. As the winner, Brun received a sponsor exemption to the PGA Tour’s Crowne Plaza Invitational.

Canada’s Brooke Henderson won the women’s individual title with 13 birdies.
