J.T. Poston felt the pressure of not winning a college tournament in his first two years at Western Carolina.

Now, that has all changed.

Poston won three times – the Golfweek Program Challenge, the Cardinal Intercollegiate and The Hummingbird Intercollegiate – this fall and placed in the top five in all five tournaments for the Catamounts.

“I think I’m just overall more consistent. I know when to be more consistent, whether it’s being aggressive at pins or being conservative off the tee,” Poston said. “I putted very well all season, and when you have confidence in your putter, it leads to good things.”

Poston, a junior from Hickory, N.C., broke through at the Golfweek Program Challenge. Poston won after leading in the first and second rounds but concedes he was nervous after both rounds because he had never been in that position.

That’s where the help of first-year head coach Bryant Odom came in. Odom, an All-American at Georgia, helped Poston tremendously when he held the lead.

“He told me to take it one shot at a time, and not to look at the leaderboard so often,” Poston said. “I respect him for that, and he was a big help for me.”

Poston, No. 13 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, says he will look to grow on his fall season. During the winter, he will work on his short game and when the weather is nice in Cullowhee, N.C., he’ll work on his full swing.

“To finally get it (a win) off my back was huge," Poston said, "and it gives me confidence moving forward."
