Peter Uihlein won the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year on Nov. 18 becoming the first American to win the award since it was established in 1960.

Peter Uihlein is the first American to earn the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award on the European Tour.

The 24-year-old won his first European Tour title at the Madeira Islands Open. He finished 14th in The Race to Dubai in 2013.

In August, he came within inches of recording the first 59 in European Tour history at Kingsbarn in the second round of the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship. Uihlein ended up losing in a sudden-death playoff.

“It’s an honor to win the Sir Henry Cotton Rookie of the Year award,” said Uihlein, who won the 2010 U.S. Amateur before joining the pro ranks. “I wasn’t expecting it, but it’s been a great year and I’m very pleased. I think I’m the first non-European to win it, so that’s a great honor. Any time you’re the first of anything, it’s neat.”
