Young, Strom capture Polo Golf Junior Classic titles
Cameron Young and Linnea Strom captured victories Friday at the Polo Golf Junior Classic at PGA National in Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.
Young defeated Jorge Garcia, 5 and 4, in the boys match-play final while Strom held off Lakareber Abe for a 1-up victory in the girls final.
After Young and Garcia halved the opening hole of their match, Young took the lead with a birdie at No. 2. He didn't lose a hole all match, and closed out the win with birdie at the par-4 14th hole.
Young's victory comes in just the second AJGA start of his career. He tied for 20th at the Junior Players in September.
“This is probably the best field I’ve ever played against – the most concentrated junior field in the world,” Young said. “Beating the kids I did in Brad Dalke, Andy Zhang and Jorge [Garcia] today . . . I even surprised myself.”
Like Young, Strom never trailed in her match. The Sweden native birdied her opening hole to take the early lead. She was 5 up at the turn and 4 up through 12 holes.
Abe, an Alabama signee, won hole Nos. 13-15 with pars and was just 1 down with three to play. But three halves to close allowed Strom to hang on for the victory.
“I was very nervous the entire round,” Strom said. “Even when I was 5 up after nine holes, I just tried to focus on my own game. She (Abe) started to play good and I made some bogeys, but I just wanted to win so much.”
