The first match of the day went to the Internationals, as Jason Day and Graham DeLaet won three of the last four holes to notch a 1-up victory over Brandt Snedeker and Hunter Mahan.

Here's how the match unfolded:

• • •

HOLE NO. 1

The weather is a bit cloudy, but comfortable as the 10th Presidents Cup gets under way. A pretty rowdy crowd on the first tee box, mostly vocal about the U.S. Both Mahan and Day split the fairway to get things started while DeLaet and Snedeker are in fairway bunkers. Snedeker goes from bunker to bunker before DeLaet finds the green with his approach. Mahan and Day are also on the putting surface. Mahan and Snedeker each make par after a good lag putt and bunker shot, respectively. DeLaet then drains a 12-footer for birdie to give the Internationals the early lead.

THRU 1 HOLE: Internationals, 1 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 2

All four players find the short grass off the tee at the par-4 second hole. DeLaet then sticks his approach to about 9 feet, but Mahan answers by putting his approach shot to about 3 feet. After DeLaet misses his birdie try, Mahan converts his to square the match.

THRU 2 HOLES: All square

• • •

HOLE NO. 3

Just like at No. 2, all four players find the fairway off the tee at the par-4 third hole. And just like the previous hole, as well, DeLaet and Mahan trade good approaches. Snedeker and Day have birdie putts, too. With Day in with par, DeLaet misses his birdie putt from 13 feet. After a Mahan miss, Snedeker drains his 6-footer for birdie to take the hole.

THRU 3 HOLES: U.S., 1 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 4

Hunter Mahan sticks his tee shot to 4 feet at the par-4 fourth, and the U.S. extends its lead in this match.

THRU 4 HOLES: U.S., 2 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 5

DeLaet and Snedeker give their teams birdies at the par-5 fifth hole, and the hole is halved. All five holes have been won with birdies so far in this match.

THRU 5 HOLES: U.S., 2 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 6

After a Snedeker birdie at the par-4 sixth, Day and DeLaet can't match, and the Americans take a 3-up lead.

THRU 6 HOLES: U.S., 3 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 7

Day cozies his long eagle putt to gimme range at the par-5 seventh hole. Snedeker and Mahan can't match and the Internationals get a hole back.

THRU 7 HOLES: U.S., 2 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 8

All four players find the sand off the tee at the par-3 eighth, and all but Day fail to save par. Internationals take the hole.

THRU 8 HOLES: U.S., 1 up

DeLaet and Snedeker trade birdies at the par-4 ninth, and the hole is halved.

• • •

HOLE NO. 12

The par-3 12th hole is halved with pars. Day found a bunker off the tee and couldn't save par, forcing DeLaet to make his par, which he did.

THRU 12 HOLES: U.S., 1 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 13

DeLaet's par cancels out pars from both Americans, and No. 13 is halved.
