Reigning Masters champion Adam Scott and 21-year-old Hideki Matsuyama sought to earn a point for the Internationals against past FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas and 2012 U.S. Open champ Webb Simpson. The match was never led by more than two shots – and the Internationals never led – but ended in a halve thanks to a late comeback. Here are the highlights as it unfolded:

• • •

HOLE NO. 1

With three pars in the group, including what could have been a clutch 8-footer from Hideki Matsuyama, Webb Simpson makes a birdie putt to give the U.S. a quick lead in the day's second match.

THROUGH ONE HOLE: U.S. 1 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 2

Everyone finds the fairway at No. 2, and then the green. None of the birdie putts fall, and the hole is halved with pars all around.

THROUGH TWO HOLES: U.S. 1 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 3

Everyone has a short approach at this par-4 third hole – and Scott and Simpson match birdies here, halving the hole.

THROUGH THREE HOLES: U.S. 1 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 4

They're all on the green at the par-4 third hole. Scott is first to two-putt for par and Simpson follows suit, after which Matsuyama rolls in a birdie. Haas then matches Matsuyama to preserve the Americans' lead in this match.

THROUGH FOUR HOLES: U.S. 1 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 5

Haas and Scott find the green here, the Aussie doing so in two shots on this par-4 while Haas laid up. Haas makes birdie, while Scott's eagle putt just lips out and the hole is halved.

THROUGH FIVE HOLES: U.S. 1 up.

• • •

HOLE NO. 6

Matsuyama, Scott and Simpson find the green here, while Haas gets up and down for par. The Internationals miss their birdie tries and the hole is halved.

THROUGH SIX HOLES: U.S. 1 up.

• • •

HOLE NO. 7

Scott and Simpson reach the green in two at the par-5 seventh hole; Scott misses his eagle putt, then Simpson does the same and the hole is halved with birdies.

THROUGH SEVEN HOLES: U.S. 1 up.

• • •

HOLE NO. 8

Everyone but Simpson finds the green at the par-3 eighth, with Haas closest to the pin. Simpson gets up and down for par, while Matsuyama and Scott two-putt – Haas makes his birdie to extend the Americans' lead.

THROUGH EIGHT HOLES: U.S. 2 up.

• • •

HOLE NO. 9

Everyone hits their tee ball in the fairway at the par-4 ninth, with only Matsuyama missing the green. Scott cashes in for birdie to narrow the Internationals' deficit in this match.

THROUGH NINE HOLES: U.S. 1 up.

• • •

HOLE NO. 10

Adam Scott sinks a clutch par putt of about 6 feet, after which Bill Haas makes about a 4-footer and the hole is halved.

THROUGH 10 HOLES: U.S. 1 up.

• • •

HOLE NO. 11

All but Haas find the fairway at the par-5 11th – but Matsuyama steals the show as his second shot lands less than 3 feet from the hole and settles behind the pin inside 15 feet. His putt runs past, however, and it's Adam Scott who cards birdie to square up the match with an up-and-down after getting greenside in two.

THROUGH 11 HOLES: All square

• • •

HOLE NO. 12

Three 3s and a 2 – Bill Haas carding the birdie at the par-3 12th to immediately restore the Americans' lead.

THROUGH 12 HOLES: U.S. 1 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 13

Hideki Matsuyama goes collar-to-collar, then gets up and down for par. But Bill Haas makes his second birdie in as many holes to extend the American's lead in this match.

THROUGH 13 HOLES: U.S. 2 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 14

Scott drives the green at this 309-yard par 4, but is 70 feet or more from the pin. Simpson answers with a second shot to about 5 feet. Scott lags his eagle attempt to about 5 feet or more, then makes the birdie putt. Simpson also makes his putt to preserve the margin in this match.

THROUGH 14 HOLES: U.S. 2 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 15

The U.S. looks to get dormie at the par-5 15th. But Adam Scott gets greenside in two – and holes out for eagle to pull the Internationals closer in this match.

THROUGH 15 HOLES: U.S. 1 up

• • •

HOLE NO. 16

Having birdied each of the previous par 3s, Bill Haas' tee shot at the 16th finds the green again but more than 30 feet from the pin. But it's Matsuyama who cards birdie this time and pulls himself and Scott even.

THROUGH 16 HOLES: All square

• • •

HOLE NO. 17

At the long par-4 17th, this match takes on a new life. Haas misses the fairway, but finds the green as Simpson misses the green from the fairway; Matsuyama and Scott both reach in regulation. Scott misses his putt well left. Haas sinks his birdie putt. Matsuyama misses low and the Americans are back in front.

THROUGH 17 HOLES: U.S. 1 up.

• • •

HOLE NO. 18

Everyone finds the fairway again, with Matsuyama getting the best end result – hitting to about a foot earning a conceded birdie. Simpson hits a solid bunker shot that isn't enough after Matsuyama's approach, while Haas takes aim at a birdie putt of about 25 feet but misses low.

RESULT: Match halved.
