2011 FedEx Cup champion Bill Haas and five-time PGA Tour winner Hunter Mahan of the U.S. look to help the U.S. widen its lead Friday against four-time major champion Ernie Els and Brendon de Jonge, who has $8 million in career Tour earnings. De Jonge continued his strong play from the opener while Els stepped his game up – and the Internationals earned a 4 and 3 victory as the Americans turned in a lackluster round. Here's a recap of the match's highlights.

• • •

Hole No. 1

Haas finds the fairway and inherits a birdie putt inside 15 feet from Mahan. Els and de Jonge follow a similar path, with Els missing a birdie try of more than 20 feet. Haas' birdie put just barely misses and both teams card a par.

THROUGH ONE HOLE: All square

• • •

Hole No. 2

de Jonge finds the fairway here and Els puts him on the green in scoring position, while Mahan and Haas do the same but more than 30 feet from the pin. de Jonge wins the hole with a birdie putt.

THROUGH TWO HOLES: Internationals, 1 up

• • •

Hole No. 3

De Jonge's approach is tight and the U.S wastes a shot when Mahan's approach finds the water; Haas tries to hole out a chip from the rough, but misses and the Americans concede the birdie.

THROUGH THREE HOLES: Internationals, 2 up

• • •

Hole No. 4

Mahan and de Jonge both give their partners birdie tries at this par 3, with tee shots to about 15 and 10 feet respectively. But both putts are missed and the hole is halved with pars.

THROUGH FOUR HOLES: Internationals, 2 up

• • •

Hole No. 5

While the Americans only manage par, Els converts on an eagle try and widens the Internationals' lead even further.

THROUGH FIVE HOLES: Internationals, 3 up

• • •

Hole No. 6

The Americans scramble for a halve, as Haas' approach from the rough leaves a long putt that Mahan misses by 10-12 feet; Haas jars the par save though.

THROUGH SIX HOLES: Internationals, 3 up

• • •

Hole No. 7

Haas hits a solid pitch to get onto the green at this par-5 in three, after which Mahan hits a good 7-foot birdie attempt that lips out 270 degrees. A 25- to 30-foot birdie try by de Jong misses, but Els makes a short par putt and the hole is halved.

THROUGH SEVEN HOLES: Internationals, 3 up

• • •

Hole No. 8

De Jonge gives Els a good look at birdie, but the putt misses. A sand-save par by the Americans keeps their deficit from getting worse.

THROUGH EIGHT HOLES: Internationals, 3 up

• • •

Hole No. 9

De Jonge's approach finds the bunker, but Mahan's nearly guarantees par as it stops about a foot from the pin. Els answers the call – and holes out from the bunker. The U.S. loses an opportunity.

THROUGH NINE HOLES: Internationals, 3 up

• • •

Hole No. 10

An improbable long, left-to-right, downhill putt by Mahan finds the bottom of the hole for a U.S. birdie – but de Jonge rolls in a birdie as well and the hole is halved.

THROUGH 10 HOLES: Internationals, 3 up

• • •

Hole No. 11

Another hole, another birdie putt made by de Jonge for the Internationals. But Mahan misses from about 15 feet or so, and the U.S. slips further behind.

THROUGH 11 HOLES: Internationals, 4 up

• • •

Hole No. 12

Both tee shots at this par 3 provide birdie tries of about 15 feet – both of which miss and the hole is halved with pars, the Internationals moving closer to a point.

THROUGH 12 HOLES: Internationals, 4 up

• • •

Hole No. 13

Both approaches, again by de Jonge and Mahan, provide birdie tries of about 15 feet once again – both Els and Haas miss their putts once more, and the hole is halved with pars, the Internationals moving closer to a point.

THROUGH 13 HOLES: Internationals, 4 up

• • •

Hole No. 14

Both teams find the fairway and the green; de Jonge has a birdie try to win this match, but misses low and the hole is halved with pars. The match is dormie.

THROUGH 14 HOLES: Internationals, 4 up

• • •

Hole No. 15

As Haas misses an eagle chip at this par 5, Els putts close enough to assume birdie and the Americans concede the match.

RESULT: Internationals, 4 and 3
