Julia Potter was the only player to shoot under par Saturday in Round 1 of stroke-play qualifying at the U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur. The 25-year-old leads by five.

Potter is a former member of the University of Missouri women’s golf team. Her 2-under 69 at Biltmore Forest Country Club in Asheville, N.C., included three birdies and one bogey. Potter, of Granger, Ind., leads Canada’s Christina Proteau by five.

Proteau, 30, is a criminal prosecutor for the British Columbia Ministry of Justice. This is her second U.S. Mid-Amateur appearance. She battled an illness on Saturday but still managed to stay near the top of the leaderboard with one birdie and four bogeys.

Four players are tied for third at 75, including Rachel Smith, Olivia Herrick, Mercedes Huarte and Martha Leach, the 2009 U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion.
