Boland tops stroke-play medalist at U.S. Mid-Am

Davis Boland after defeating stroke-play medalist Matthew Mattare in the first round of match play at the 2013 U.S. Mid-Amateur.

Stroke-play medalist Matthew Mattare's run at the U.S. Mid-Amateur stopped short Monday when Davis Boland sunk an 8-footer for par to win 2 and 1 in the first round of match play at Country Club of Birmingham (Ala.).

Boland, of Louisville, Ky., said he "got a little bit lucky, but you have to in match play.” The 42-year-old had failed to reach match play in his only previous Mid-Amateur appearance.

“Probably pretty close to the best day of my golfing career,” said Boland, a lumber company sales manager who plays about 20 rounds a year.

The Nos. 2-3 seeds, Kenny Cook and Bill Williamson, advanced Monday, as did four-time champion Nathan Smith and former champs Tim Jackson and Kevin Marsh.

The Mid-Am's second and third rounds take place Tuesday, with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds Wednesday and the 36-hole final Thursday.
