Potter, Stasi keep winning at U.S. Women's Mid-Am

Trying to become the first medalist to win the U.S. Women's Mid-Amateur since 2000, Julia Potter won two tough matches Tuesday to advance to the quarterfinals in Asheville, N.C.

Potter, 25, defeated Marilyn Hardy in the morning, starting the match 2 down after two holes but moving ahead during the back nine for a 3-and-2 win. In the afternoon, she led early against Kate Hildahl – as much as 5 up – before needing a par at the 18th for a 1-up win.

“I honestly started thinking about it. Man, I'm starting off on fire on that front side,” Potter said. “Mind you, I felt like I had something to prove on that side and I did.”

Potter's next opponent, Tara Joy-Connelly, defeated 2007 USGA Senior Women’s Amateur champion Anna Schultz 5 and 3.

Four-time champion Meghan Stasi, last year's winner, defeated Renata Young 1 up to reach the quarterfinals despite losing the first three holes to Young.

“You can't three-putt and think you're going to win every match,” Stasi said.

Andrea Kraus ousted 2004 Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Corey Weworski, 6 and 5. The two had paired to win the Women's Trans Senior Four-Ball Championship in April.
