Virginia rallies to win; Tech's Vincent takes 3rd title
Paced by Denny McCarthy's 6-under 66 and Ji Soo Park's 67, Virginia rallied past rival Virginia Tech to win the Bank of Tennessee Intercollegiate on Sunday.
The Cavaliers, who found themselves tied for 11th after Friday's first round at Blackthorn Club in Jonesborough, Tenn., stormed back by going 29 under par for the final two rounds. Virginia shot a final-round 275 for a 22-under 842 total, one stroke ahead of Virginia Tech, which closed with 277.
Virginia Tech's Scott Vincent played his final six holes in 4 under to shoot 68 and win the individual title at 13-under 203. Vincent, a junior from Harare, Zimbabwe, who is No. 8 in the Golfweek/Sagarin College Rankings, has won three titles this fall for the 13th-ranked Hokies.
McCarthy tied for second with Wake Forest's Thomas Birdsey (68) at 205.
Kent State placed third at 20-under 844, followed by East Tennessee State (852) and Wake Forest (856).
