WINDERMERE, Fla. – One of the best perks of playing golf for Central Florida is frequent access to one of the most exclusive courses in the Orlando, Fla., area. The Knights have the opportunity to play Isleworth Golf and Country Club about 10 times a year, and that familiarity showed on Sunday at the Isleworth Intercollegiate.
UCF co-hosts the event with Texas Tech, and after the opening 18 holes, the Knights are in second place. The team shot 6-under 282, which is the Knights' lowest team score at the Isleworth Collegiate in its 10 years of existence. Alabama posted 8-under 280 for the first-round lead.
Senior Greg Eason led the way for UCF with a 4-under 68, but freshman Ryan Stovash, who has played in every tournament this year for the Knights, shot 2-under 70.
Stovash is from Orlando and has been to Isleworth for the Tavistock Cup. He had never played the course before coming to UCF, but Stovash has seen the property enough to know where mistakes could be made.
“You have to hit to the middle of the green, and you can’t short-side yourself out here,” he said.
Stovash and his teammates played six qualifying rounds here for the tournament. He said getting to know the course before his opponents offered a leg up, and should continue to pay off this week. The team’s best finish was in 2007, when the Knights were seventh.
UCF's thorough notes could go a long way toward bettering that.
