Sunday, October 20, 2013
UC Davis won its first tournament of the season Sunday at the Hoosier Fall Invitational. The Aggies outscored Illinois by 16 shots in the final round to break out of a tie and earn the outright win.
UC Davis posted even-par 284 in the final round at Hickory Stick Golf Club in Greenwood, Ind., which was the low round of the day. The Aggies had been tied with Illinois after 36 holes, but pulled out of sight over the final 18 holes. At 16-over 868 for the tournament, UC Davis finished 16 shots ahead of Illinois.
The Aggies have steadily improved over the fall season. They were 11th of 17 at the season-opening Ptarmigan Ram Classic, then fifth of 16 at the Branch Law Firm/Dick McGuire Invitational. UC Davis was runner-up to Pepperdine at the Golfweek Conference Challenge, then sixth at the Edean Ihlanfeldt Invitational on Oct. 9.
UC Davis ends the fall season at the end of this month at the Stanford Intercollegiate. The Hoosier title is the first regular-season victory for UC Davis, four-time defending Big West champions, since the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown two years ago. The Aggies have won the conference tournament two times since then.
Betty Chen won medalist honors for UC Davis at 3-under 210. She was two shots ahead of Minnesota’s Carmen Laguna. Ember Schuldt of Illinois was solo third at 2-over 215.
