Small inducted into Illinois Golf Hall of Fame
Illinois head coach Mike Small was inducted into the Illinois Golf Hall of Fame on Oct. 25 along with Jay Haas and Bob Harris. Small, 47, became the youngest inductee in history of the hall of fame at the ceremony held at The Glen Club.
Small is a former professional golfer, before taking over the Illini golf program 13 years ago. He has led the team to five straight Big Ten titles and has had three straight medalists at the Big Ten Championships. Last season, he led the team to a runner-up finish at the 2013 NCAA Championships.
He has won five straight Big Ten Coach of the Year honors and six all-time. Small has guided 12 All-Americans and 26 All-Big Ten golfers throughout his 13-year career.
Small, a three-time PGA Professional national champion, is a five-time member of the U.S. PGA Cup team who has been named PGA of America National Professional of the Year three times. Twice he has been low PGA club professional at the PGA Championship, making the cut three times in nine appearances. Small has 10 Illinois PGA Championships to his name, including this year’s title. A four-time Illinois Open champion, he has played in three U.S. Opens.
