THE BIG 5

Stories you need to know now . . .

TEAMS

1. Oklahoma State: The Cowboys won their second consecutive tournament at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate on Oct. 29. The fifth-ranked team in the Golfweek Rankings, Oklahoma State completed its 16 shot victory with a 15-under 340 in the play-six-count-five format in Dallas. Four players finished inside the top five on the individual leaderboard.

2. South Florida: South Florida closed the fall with its first win of the season at The Invitational at Kiawah on Oct. 29 after two runner-up finishes. The Bulls were led by senior Richard James and sophomore Chase Koepka, who finished in a tie for second and a tie for fifth, respectively, in the team’s four-shot victory at The Ocean Course.

3. North Carolina: The Tar Heels were the only team to finish under par at the shortened Bridgestone Golf Collegiate at Grandover (East). With rounds of 288-283, UNC picked up its first tournament win of the season Oct. 27.

4. New Mexico State: The team won the Price’s Give Em Five Invite by nine shots Oct. 26 at Butterfield Trail GC in El Paso, Texas. The team was in second after the first round, but shot 15-under 273 in the second round to take the lead for good. A conservative 285 in the final round secured the team's second consecutive victory of the fall season.

5. Florida Gulf Coast: FGCU held on by 13 strokes to win the its own Cobra Puma Invitational for the third straight year. The Eagles shot a tournament-best 282 in the first round to gain a comfortable lead right off the bat. It was the team’s first win of the season Oct. 28.

INDIVIDUALS

1. Kevin Dougherty, Oklahoma State: After an opening 8-under 63 at the Royal Oaks Intercollegiate, Dougherty went wire-to-wire and won his first collegiate event. The senior held off teammate Wyndham Clark and SMU’s Austin Smotherman for a one-shot victory. He finished at 11-under 202.

2. Joey Garber, Georgia: Perhaps the senior didn’t pick the right time to win his first individual title, as his score didn’t count towards the team total while playing this week at The Invitational at Kiawah, but he won nonetheless. Ranked sixth by Golfweek, Garber tied the tournament-record with his 6-under 66 in the second round. It was also his new career-low round as he won by three.

3. Henry Do, North Carolina: The freshman tied for medalist honors at the Bridgestone Golf Collegiate for his first win. Do, of Canton, Mich., fired rounds of 68-71 for a 5-under total.

4. Lars Van Meijel, Memphis: This freshman was the player who tied Do at Bridgestone Golf Collegiate with a final round 6-under 66 – giving him his second win of the year in three starts. The Netherlands native won his first tournament as a Tiger at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate in September.

5. Chase Koepka, South Florida: This week, in the Bulls' last tournament of the fall, the sophomore finished in a tie for fifth at the The Invitational at Kiawah. In four starts, he has two victories and his lone finish outside the top-10 was a T-12 at the Brickyard Collegiate. He is ranked eighth in the Golfweek College Rankings.
