Rainy Spirit International shortened to 54 holes

After more than six inches of rain soaked into Whispering Pines Golf Club in Trinity, Texas, on Wednesday, tournament organizers at the Spirit International Amateur Golf Championship have announced they will shorten the event from 72 holes to 54 holes.

Director of Agronomy Michael Dieckhoff and his staff of 43 maintenance workers addressed standing water on several holes at Whispering Pines Thursday morning. The first round was suspended at about 10:30 a.m. on Wednesday, but will resume Thursday at 2:30 p.m.

Tournament Director Eric Fredricksen said the goal is to have 36 holes completed by Friday evening.

“That way we can have a comfortable final round of 18 holes on Saturday,” he said.

Sweden has the early lead in the International Team competition with a 4-under total through five holes. The biennial Spirit International is a co-ed team best ball event. Twenty countries send their top two male and female amateurs each year.

A sponsor exemption to the PGA Tour’s Crowne Plaza Invitational will be awarded to the player with the low score in the male division.
