No. 3 Oklahoma State
2012-13 Golfweek ranking: 12
Go-to guy: Sophomore Jordan Niebrugge
Season outlook: Oklahoma State golf found headlines for much of the summer break. First, it was the firing of head coach Mike McGraw and women’s head coach Alan Bratton being named as McGraw's replacement. Then it was a breakout summer from rising sophomore Jordan Niebrugge, who won the U.S. Amateur Public Links title and then the Western Amateur Championship to earn a spot on the U.S. Walker Cup team.
The Cowboys, who in 2012 missed advancing to the NCAA Championship for the first time in 65 years, again struggled at times last season, at least according to their standards, missing match play at the NCAA finals. This year, however, you can expect a return to the nation's elite. With four returnees – Niebrugge (43) and seniors Ian Davis (33), Talor Gooch (45) and Kevin Dougherty (90) – who were ranked inside the top 90 last season, this team will be back in the mix.
Bratton, a four-time All-American for the Cowboys (1992-95), also has a few newcomers who will compete for playing time, including freshmen Zach Olsen and Stratton Nolen.
