Svoboda uses SLDR to take Chiquita Classic

Andrew Svoboda said hello to TaylorMade’s new SLDR driver, putting it into play for the first time at the Web.com Tour’s Chiquita Classic. He won and earned a first-place check for $180,000.

“You hear it all the time,” Svoboda said. “People say you have to drive the ball in the fairway. It’s true, and that’s what I did and that’s why I won. I hit a lot of iron shots from the fairway.”

The SLDR features an adjustable 20-gram weight. This weight, which slides on a track located on the sole of the club, can be locked into any of 21 positions. Depending on which position is selected, the driver will promote a draw, fade or straight drive.

Svoboda’s bag: TaylorMade SLDR driver (measured loft 10 degree), TaylorMade RBZ 3-wood (14.5 degree), TaylorMade Rescue hybrid (21 degree), TaylorMade MC irons (4-9), Titleist Vokey wedges (48, 51, 56, 60 degree) and a Yes! Donna 2 putter. He used a Titleist Pro V1x ball.

In addition, Svoboda uses a 71-gram UST Mamiya Elements Fire X shaft in his driver. Elements series driver shafts (Earth, Wind, Fire) have now won two of the past three tournaments on the Web.com Tour. Svoboda joined Bronson La’Cassie (Cox Classic) in the Elements winner’s circle.

Elements series shafts are available through certified UST dealers. MSRP is $311. The three Elements shafts are reinforced in the midsection for extra stability. The three shafts offer different trajectories: Elements Earth has a lower trajectory, Elements Wind a higher trajectory, and Elements Fire a mid-trajectory.

Svoboda plays Oban shafts in his 3-wood and hybrid. Both are Oban Kiyoshi models, the 3-wood shaft weighing 75 grams and the hybrid shaft weighing 110 grams. He uses True Temper Dynamic Gold S300 steel shafts in his TaylorMade irons and S400 in his Titleist wedges.

The 33-year-old Svoboda, who has captured two Web.com Tour events in the past month, has worked with teacher Carl Rabito since 2006. Rabito conducts golf schools at Sanctuary Ridge Golf Club in Clermont, Fla.; Bolingbrook (Ill.) Golf Club; Aspen (Colo.) Golf Club; and Bayou Oaks Golf Course in New Orleans. (Rabito’s noteworthy mission: He has established the Rabito Foundation to organize golf programs and provide scholarships for talented young golfers – 7th grade through 10th grade) – who otherwise might not have the funds for such instruction. Applications are being accepted at Bolingbrook for the initial class. The primary sponsor for this venture is Chicago Office Technology Group.)
