Arizona leads Women’s State Team Championship

Arizona took a two-shot lead after the first round of the USGA Women’s State Team Championship Sept. 17 at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.

Hannah O’Sullivan, 15, shot 2-under 71 over the South Course to lead Arizona to a 2-under 144 total. Teammates Stephanie Kim, 22, shot even-par 73 and Kylee Duede, 22, shot 9-over 82.

The 54-hole event counts the two lowest scores of three players for each round.

Florida, behind even-par rounds by Meghan Stasi and Tara Joy-Connelly, was second at 146. Rounding out the top five were New Mexico at 147, Indiana at 148 and Maryland at 150.

O’Sullivan, who played the 2012 U.S. Women’s Open at age 14, had three birdies and a bogey in her round.

“I was hitting really solid putts all day,” said O’Sullivan, who reached the round of 32 at this year’s U.S. Girls’ Junior. “The front nine, I wasn’t struggling but trying to judge speed. The back nine, the speed kind of clicked for me. I started making more putts and hitting some good lags.”

Two-time defending champion Georgia was tied for ninth at 154.
