New Jersey broke free from a tie at the USGA Women’s State Team Championship on Thursday, pulling ahead of Florida to win the state’s first title in the event.

Alice Chen posted the team’s low score for the third consecutive day – a 1-over 74 at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio. Her second-round 67 helped New Jersey make a run up the leaderboard. Chen tied Maryland’s Bryana Nguyen at 6-under 213 to win co-medalist honors in the event. Cindy Ha contributed a final-round 75 for New Jersey, and Tara Fleming posted 82.

At 8-over 446, New Jersey ended the day three shots ahead of runner-up Florida. Meghan Stasi, a four-time U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion, drained an 8-footer for birdie at 18 to secure second place for her team. Stasi also finished fifth individually with her 3-over 222 total.

Virginia, led by Abby Portyrata’s final-round 72, was one shot behind Florida. First-round leader Arizona was another shot behind that, in solo fourth.

A 36-hole cut was implemented to account for inclement weather that moved through the area on Thursday. Only 27 teams teed it up for the final 18 holes.
