New Jersey, Florida tied at Women's State Team

Alice Chen shot a record-tying 6-under 67 Sept. 18 to pace her New Jersey team to a share of the lead with Florida after two rounds of the USGA Women’s State Team Championship at NCR Country Club in Kettering, Ohio.

New Jersey and Florida are tied at 5-over 297 heading into today’s final round over the South Course. First-round leader Arizona is five shots behind. Two-time defending champion Georgia is tied for sixth.

With the potential for inclement weather Thursday and the desire to give as many teams as possible a chance to complete 54 holes, a 36-hole cut was implemented. The cut came at 30-over 322, with 27 of the 52 teams scheduled to complete the final 18 holes.

Chen leads the individual race at 7-under 139, followed by Maryland’s Bryana Nguyen at 3-under 143 and Arizona’s Hannah O’Sullivan at 2-under 144.

Chen’s 67 and teammate Tara Fleming’s 79 gave New Jersey even-par 146 for Round 2. New Jersey’s third player, Cindy Ha, shot 81.

The 54-hole event counts the two lowest scores of three players for each round.

Florida shot 151 behind four-time U.S. Women’s Mid-Amateur champion Meghan Stasi (75) and Ericka Schneider (76). Teammate Tara Joy-Connelly shot 81.

Chen had six birdies, an eagle and two bogeys en route to her 67. She joins Brenda Corrie Kuehn (1997), Kathy Hartwiger (2009) and Rachel Dai (2011) with the lowest 18-hole score in championship history. Chen’s two-day total of 7-under 139 also ties the low mark set by Marla Jemsek-Weeks in 1997.

“I just hit good approach shots in,” said Chen, who will attend Furman in fall 2014. “It was just, hit the fairway, hit the green and then try and make the putt.”

This year, Chen has won the state high school individual title, the Women’s Amateur and Junior Girls’ Championship along with the Lessing’s AJGA Classic, all in New Jersey.
