KINGSTON SPRINGS, Tenn. –- It’s not called the Music City for nothing.

Texas A&M’s Ben Crancer made some sweet music at The Golf Club of Tennessee on Friday by firing a competitive course-record 8-under 63 during the second round of the Dick’s Sporting Good Collegiate Challenge Cup.

Crancer, a sophomore, has a two-round total of 11-under 131 to take a five-shot lead for the individual title over Virginia’s Denny McCarthy and Vanderbilt’s Hunter Stewart.

Crancer didn’t get off to the start he wanted in his morning round and was 2 over through his first three holes.

He rallied. Over the next 33 holes, he made 15 birdies and two bogeys.

“I hit the ball just as good (as I did in the morning),” Crancer said. “But made a lot more putts.”

His closing stretch was more impressive when he finished with four straight birdies. His only real ‘gimme’ putt was when he two-putted on the par-5 7th.

“The biggest stretch was Nos. 5-9…” head coach J.T. Higgins said of Crancer going 8 under on those five holes. “I think he really likes that stretch through there and he really took advantage of that.”

Crancer made his fare share of long putts throughout the day.

“I’ve been putting well lately so that always helps,” he added. His second-round 63 is the lowest round of his career.

The Aggies also lead on the team leaderboard after a 13-under 271 in the second round.

After an opening 79, senior Jade Scott shot a 5-under 67. Sophomore Andrew Lister shot a 69, and junior Ty Dunlap fired an even-par 72 in the play five-count-four format.

Texas A&M leads first-round leader Georgia by a single shot. Georgia’s two-round total is 10-under 558.

The difference maker were holes Nos. 5-9, the finishing holes in the afternoon for the Aggies and Bulldogs.

The Aggies were a combined 6 under, while the Bulldogs were 4 over.

“They played great coming down the stretch,” added Higgins.

More music will be made on Saturday as the inaugural team and individual champion will be crowned.
