Defending champ Port advances at Senior Am
Stroke-play medalist Akemi Khaiat and defending champion Ellen Port advanced through the first round of match play at the 52nd USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif.
Khaiat, playing in her first Senior Women’s Amateur, downed Ellie Layton, 5 and 4, in the opening round. Khaiat shot 3-over 147 (72-75) to take stroke play by one shot over Mina Hardin, the 2010 Senior Women’s Amateur champion.
“At the beginning, because of nerves, I wasn’t swinging well,” said Khaiat, a property investor who lives in Los Angeles and holds Japanese citizenship. “But at the end I got the rhythm back. It took a while, but I hung around. I am just trying not to make a mistake.”
Khaiat made a trip last week to Japan to play in the Kanto State Senior Amateur and returned just before Saturday’s first day of the competition, too late for a practice round at CordeValle, and conceded that she had low expectations. Earlier this summer, she was the runner-up at the 2013 Japan Senior Women’s Amateur.
Khaiat is a seven-time club champion at Riviera Country Club in Pacific Palisades, Calif., site of the PGA Tour’s Northern Trust Open.
Port, a five-time USGA champion and the 2014 U.S. Curtis Cup captain, came from behind to defeat Lisa Smego, 2 and 1. Port, who won this event in 2012, was 1 down after 14 holes, but won Nos. 15, 16 and 17 for the victory.
In addition to Port and Hardin, two other Senior Women’s Amateur past champions advanced: Sherry Herman (2009) and Terri Frohnmayer (2011).
Carol Semple Thompson, a four-time Senior Women’s Amateur champion (1999-2002), was eliminated in the first round by Pamela Kuong, 2 and 1.
The second and third rounds of match play are scheduled today, with the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds Wednesday and the 18-hole final on Thursday.
