After a pair of third-place finishes in its first two events of the fall, the Houston men's team has its first victory.
The Cougars, No. 17 in Golfweek's preseason rankings, ran away from the field Tuesday at the Fighting Irish Gridiron Classic in South Bend, Ind., finishing with a 5-under 847 total for a 15-shot victory over runner-up Michigan State at the Warren Golf Course at Notre Dame. Yale finished third at 15-over 867.
Houston golfers finished in three of the top four positions, including medalist Kyle Pilgrim, who shot a final-round 5-under 66 to finish at 5-under 208 and earn a one-shot victory over teammate Blair Hamilton and Georgia Southern's Will Evans. Houston's Vincent Martino was another shot back in fourth, and another Cougar, Curtis Reed, finished 11th.
Houston had started the season with third-place finishes at the Northern Intercollegiate and the Golfweek Conference Challenge.
