Port advances at USGA Senior Women's Am

Defending champion Ellen Port won two matches to advance to the quarterfinals of the USGA Senior Women’s Amateur Championship.

Port, the 2014 U.S. Curtis Cup captain, defeated Patty Moore, 4 and 3, in the round of 32 at CordeValle in San Martin, Calif. Port then eliminated Lisa McGill, 6 and 5, in the round of 16. With each match, Port has played fewer holes – 17 in first match, 15 in second match and 13 in third match.

Stroke-play medalist Akemi Nakata, playing her first Senior Women’s Amateur, was eliminated in the second round by McGill, 1 up.

Mina Hardin, the 2010 Senior Women’s Amateur champion, won two matches – 2-and-1 over Cindy Morris and 7-and-5 over Karen Ferree – to reach the quarterfinals.

Other quarterfinalists are: Marilyn Hardy, Liz Waynick, Mary Jan Hiestand, Caryn Wilson, Corey Weworski and Susan Cohn.

Quarterfinals and semifinals will be held Wednesday with the 18-hole final scheduled for Thursday.
