Limited Edition Exotics CB Pro fairway woods

The limited edition Exotics CB Pro fairway wood from Tour Edge features a "Slip Stream" design that you've never seen before: Wavy steel ribbons cover the sole.

For years, Tour Edge targeted its products to value-minded golfers who refused to pay a premium for the latest and greatest gear. Then, in 2006, the company launched its Exotics brand with clubs boasting ultra-modern material and designs. They attracted a different consumer – for whom price was far less of an issue.

The more-expensive Exotics line is going strong, appealing to many accomplished players, and the company announced the November release of what easily could be described as its most exotic club yet: the limited edition Exotics CB Pro fairway wood.

The goal with the Exotics CB Pro was to create a fairway wood that would appeal to golfers who don't like the large-headed, driver-replacement style fairway woods that have proliferated the marketplace in recent years. According to Dave Glod, Tour Edge's founder and president, there still are many golfers who want the maneuverability and control that a smaller-headed fairway wood can offer.

At address, the 160-cc Exotics CB Pro looks like an old-school fairway wood favored by such traditionalists. It has a titanium face, a stainless-steel body and low center of gravity that Tour Edge says help the club produce longer, higher-flying shots.

While the head is small by today's standards, Glod says that the center of the face is every bit as hot as larger-headed fairway woods. He insists that using an Exotics CB Pro doesn't mean sacrificing distance.

Furthermore, a glance at the sole of the club provides a look that never has been seen before. Ribbons of steel wave across the sole as if they were wind-blown. Tour Edge calls it a "Slip Stream" sole, and Glod touts its ability to reduce turf interaction.

"The sole of the club really only hits the ground in three small spots," he said. "If you add up the area, it's smaller than a dime."

That means the Exotics CB Pro should help golfers maintain clubhead speed more effectively on shots hit from the fairway or the rough.

The Exotics CB Pro, which will be available in 13.5-, 14.5-, 15.5-, 16.5- and 17.5-degree versions, has a suggested retail price of $499. The club comes standard with a Fujikura Speeder 661 or a Speeder 757 shaft. It's also covered by a 30-day play guarantee, which allows consumers to return it to the place of purchase for a store credit.
