Peter Uihlein made eight birdies and a pair of eagles en route to shooting a 12-under 60 Friday at the Alfred Dunhill Links Championship in Scotland.
The former Oklahoma State standout is 13 under through two rounds, two shots back of leader Tom Lewis. Lewis, who is 15 under overall, shot a second-round 7-under 65 on the Old Course at St. Andrew's, one of three courses being used this week.
Joost Luiten is solo second at 14 under while Oliver Wilson is one of four players tied with Uihlein for third.
After starting on tee No. 10 at Kingsbarns, Uihlein birdied No. 11 and eagled the par-5 12th. He added birdies at Nos. 17-18 to make the turn at 5 under. He added five more birdies, including one at the par-5 ninth after his eagle attempt from 40 feet for 59 missed just left, and an eagle at the par-5 third hole to close out the lowest round of his European Tour career.
His previous best round on the European Tour came in the second round of the Madeira Islands Open, where he carded a second-round 64 en route to his first European Tour victory.
The next highest American on the leaderboard is Brooks Koepka, who is tied for 20th. Former Alabama standout Justin Thomas dropped to 5 under and into a tie for 65th after a 1-over 73 at Carnoustie, which is playing the toughest of the three courses.
