A look at the 15 teams participating in this year’s Golfweek Division II Fall Invitational, which begins Monday at Crosswater in Sunriver, Ore. Nine teams finished last season ranked inside the top 25 in Golfstat’s head-to-head ranking, including Lynn University, runner-up at last year’s NCAA Division II Championship, and Nova Southeastern, which finished the season with the No. 1 ranking. Four teams in the field advanced to match play at NCAA finals.

Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 1
Coach: Ryan Jamison
The scoop: Came short of a national title defense last year (lost to eventual champion Barry in the second round of match play), but still finished the season ranked No. 1 in the nation. Nova won four times last season, and returns three members of the team that traveled to nationals. The Oregon venue could take some adjusting for the team from South Florida.

Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 4
Coach: Andrew Danna
The scoop: Lynn was runner-up at last year’s national championship for the second time in three years after losing to Barry in the championship match of the tournament. Lynn faced Barry on that blustery day in Hershey, Pa., and tied the matches 2-2-1. The NCAA used an aggregate score playoff to decide the champion, and Lynn’s (403) was four shots higher than Barry’s (399). There are just two holdovers from that team (Ernesto Vitienes and Jose Andres Miranda) as the Knights continue their season in Sunriver. They were seventh of 17 at their season opener, the Brickyard Invitational.

Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 5
Coach: Jason Owen
The scoop: Advanced to match play at last spring’s national championship but fell to Nova in the first round. This is the Otters’ first trip to Crosswater for this event. They opened the season with a fifth-place finish at the Brickyard Invitational.
• • •
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 7
Coach: Luke Bennett
The scoop: Contended for this title a year ago but went 13 over in its final six holes to tie for third. Lost in the second round of match play at last year’s NCAA Championship. Bennett is in his first year leading this team as longtime coach Steve Card recently became the interim athletic director for Western Washington.
• • •
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 11
Coach: Earl Tamiya
The scoop: The defending champions at this event still have standout senior Corey Kozuma. As usual, the Vulcans have been in the upper 48 for several days, completing a Northwest swing. Kozuma (sixth individually) led Hawaii-Hilo to fifth at the Western Washington Invitational on Sept. 24.
• • •
California State Stanislaus
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 13
Coach: John Cook
The scoop: The Warriors led through the first two rounds of this event a year ago but couldn’t keep pace with Hawaii-Hilo on the final day. Redshirt senior Rob Damschen and sophomore Paul Smith return to lead the team again this year. Both finished inside the top five individually at Crosswater. This is the Warriors’ season opener after missing NCAA match play by four shots last year.
• • •
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 21
Coach: T.L. Brown
The scoop: Also tied for third here last year. Chico State opened this season at Washington State’s home event Sept. 10 and tied for sixth among a field of Division I teams. Alistair Docherty (T-13 at Washington State) and Chris Doyle are the stars of this team.
• • •
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 23
Coach: Phil Trujillo
The scoop: It’s been a slow start to the season for the Mountain Lions after finishing 12th of 17 teams at the Brickyard Invitational and fifth of nine teams at a Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference event in Durango, Colo. Four juniors and a freshman will tee it up at Sunriver.
• • •
Colorado School of Mines
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 25
Coach: Tyler Kimble
The scoop: The Orediggers return Michael Lee, the defending champion at this event, as a senior. Lee won the team’s season opener Sept. 17, and junior John Ahern also returns to the Oredigger roster after winning the Colorado Stroke Play Championship earlier this summer. Colorado School of Mines has played two events already this season (Ryan Palmer Foundation Invitational and Fort Lewis Invitational) and won both. They’re the top-ranked school in the nation in Golfstat’s latest head-to-head rankings.
• • •
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 27
Coach: Val Verhunce
The scoop: Led through two rounds of its season opener, the Western Washington Invitational, but finish second after a final-round rally from British Columbia. The team is without its top three scorers from last season, but the Seawolves roster is deep. Eric Ash returns after a T-27 finish as an individual at last year’s NCAA Championship.
• • •
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 31
Coach: Kenny Trapp
The scoop: The Patriots finished second at the Southern Arkansas Mulerider Invitational to open the season. Dallas Baptist tied for seventh at this event last year, and Kyle Beard finished inside the top 10 individually. He and Chase Rolland return as team leaders.
• • •
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 46

Southwest Oklahoma State
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 53

Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 58
Coach: Jeff Stromgren
The scoop: The Ichabods have played twice already this season, and finished 10th at the University of Nebraska Kearney then 11th at the NSU Golf Classic. Ronnie McHenry and Max Lazzo return for the Ichabods as the second- and third-best scorers from last season.
Final 2011-12 Golfstat head-to-head ranking: 72
Coach: John Buchanan
The scoop: Tied for third at the Western Washington Invitational, and Michael Belle and Bret Thompson both finished inside the top 10 at that event. The Canadian school formerly played for the NAIA, but jumped to NCAA Division II last season.
