Former Dartmouth coach Johnson dies at 73

William (Bill) D. Johnson, former men’s golf coach at Dartmouth College, died suddenly Sept. 23 in Pinehurst, N.C. He was 73.

Johnson led the Dartmouth golf program from 1967 until his retirement in 2001. During that time, he led Dartmouth to three Ivy League titles (1970, ’78 and ’83). Johnson also served as head professional of Hanover (N.H.) Country Club while coaching at Dartmouth.

Johnson served on the NCAA golf committee from 1978-84, including as chairman from 1981-84.

He also held club professional positions at St. Claire River Country Club in Michigan and Lake Morey Country Club in Fairlee, Vt. He was inducted into the Golf Coaches Hall of Fame in 1990.

Johnson is surved by his wife of 35 years, Isabella, a son, a daughter and five grandchildren.
