Baylor did not have to play on Sunday to take the title at the SMU/Dallas Athletic Club Invitational. The third round of play was cancelled due to lightning, giving the Bears a four-stroke victory over runner-up LSU through 36 holes.
Baylor finished at 15 over par, led by junior Hayley Davis, who finished in a tie for second at 2 over.
"This was a long time coming and this team really deserved this win," head coach Jay Goble said in a release. "They work so hard every day and are getting better at the right time because postseason is coming soon. Hayley had a second-place finish in front of her parents who flew in from England to watch her. We also got solid finishes from Hadas and Laura, and that's just what they needed going into conference play."
Two other golfers finished in the top 10 for Baylor – Laura Lonardi and Hadas Libman tied for seventh at 3 over.
North Carolina sophomore Elizabeth Mallett took medalist honors after finishing at 3-under 141. She beat out the next-best golfer by five strokes. Mallett made four birdies in her final round en route to a 3-under 69, which tied the lowest single-round score of the tournament.
North Carolina (21 over), Texas-San Antonio (28 over) and Kansas (29 over) rounded out the top five.
The win was Baylor's first of the year.
