Ortiz prevails in Mexico for 2nd Web.com Tour win

Carlos Ortiz notched his second Web.com Tour victory of the season, capturing the El Bosque Mexico Championship April 13 at El Bosque Country Club in Leon, Mexico.

The 22-year-old rookie from Guadalajara, Mexico, who won last month’s Panama Claro Championship for his first career pro victory, closed with a 4-under 68 to finish at 13-under 275. Former Alabama standout Justin Thomas, who shot a final-round 69, finished two shots back in solo second.

“It’s an honor to win here in Mexico,” said Ortiz, who played his college golf at North Texas. “It makes everyone so happy around here. I don’t have the words, it just feels great.”

Ortiz opened the tournament with a 74, but followed with rounds of 67 and 66 to grab a share of the third-round lead with Australian Nathan Green. Ortiz went 5 under through his first 15 holes in the final round before bogeys at Nos. 16 and 17. A closing birdie at the 18th, though, sealed the victory.

“I was pretty shaky at the end,” Ortiz said. “But I managed to hit it on the green in two at 18. After that, I knew I had it.”

The $126,000 winner’s prize moved Ortiz from second to first on the Web.com Tour money list with $304,458 — well over the amount needed to earn a PGA Tour spot next season as a top-25 finisher. He would earn an immediate PGA Tour promotion with another victory.

“I just stay patient, trust my game plan, and just let it flow,” Ortiz said. “I’m going to keep doing what I’m doing and see if I can get that third win.”
