Jimenez charges to 65 in Champions Tour debut
Miguel Angel Jimenez and Bernhard Langer are riding their Masters momentum into the Champions Tour's Greater Gwinnett Championship.
Jimenez fired off a tournament-record 65 in his debut on the tour to take the first-round lead, buoyed by a 30 before the turn, while Langer shot 68 to join Kenny Perry and Steve Pate T-2 at 68.
“I love watching him,” Pate said of Jimenez. “I’m glad he’s come out and playing our events.”
Same for Perry, apparently.
"This tour is so much more laid back and relaxed,” Perry said. “The atmosphere is so much different. I actually didn’t know what he’d do today. Honestly didn’t think he’d shoot 65. Amazing man. Great player. Fun to watch."
Jimenez finished fourth at the Masters, where Langer tied for eighth and Fred Couples tied for 20th.
Couples shot 69, a chance to hold second alone done in by a double bogey at the last; he's tied for fifth with Jeff Sluman. Light rain hit course during play, but nothing as strong as the weather that halted the PGA Tour's RBC Heritage.
