Fieger wins Senior PGA Professional title

Gene Fieger won the Senior PGA Professional National Championship on Friday in Port St. Lucie (shown here at the 2006 PGA Championship).

With 35 spots at stake for next month's Senior PGA Championship, Gene Fieger shot 69 Friday to close out a six-shot win in the 25th Southworth Senior PGA Professional National Championship in Port St. Lucie, Fla.

“I’ve always said it would be nice to come up the 18th hole with a six- or seven-shot lead,” said Fieger, director of golf at Hideout GC in Naples, Fla. “Then when you have one, you still feel tentative. I hit it over the green at 18, not wanting to go into the water." He could easily afford bogey, though.

Don Berry, head professional at Edinburgh USA in Brooklyn Park, Minn., finished second with a 70 after birdieing five holes on the back nine. Jeff Coston, Frank Esposito Jr. and Steve Parker finished tied for third.

The tournament was postponed and relocated after heavy rain and flooding prevented it being played last October in northern Virginia.
