Kuchar, Donald find top 10 often
Wednesday, April 23, 2014
Matt Kuchar continues to pile up the top 10s at a furious pace. His win at Harbour Town Golf Links was his eighth top 10 of the season, matching what he had all of last year, but if you look back to 2010, he’s not doing anything out of the ordinary.
In fact, dating back to the start of 2010 season, Kuchar has compiled 45 top 10s in 106 PGA Tour starts.
The next-best total over that period belongs to Luke Donald, who had 14 in 2011 and has 37 since 2010. Dustin Johnson (33) and Webb Simpson (31) are next, while Brandt Snedeker, Steve Stricker, and Jim Furyk all have 29.
Of course, the flip side is, for being in the hunt all those times, Kuchar has managed to win just five times since 2010 and Donald has just three victories.
If you go by percentages, Donald since 2010 has the best rate of success when it comes to top 10s – 37 in 81 tournaments, or .457. Rory McIlroy (28 in 64) is next at .431, just ahead of Kuchar’s .425.
Still, if you digest all these numbers, you can’t help but come away with a greater appreciation of exactly what a behemoth Tiger Woods was during an incomparable 10-year period, 1998-2007. In that time, Woods played in 188 PGA Tour tournaments, was top 10 a mind-boggling 130 times (a .691 clip) and won 61 times (a .325 clip).
In regard to a different kind of top 10: When Kuchar holed that dramatic bunker shot at the 72nd hole of the RBC Heritage, he became the first top 10-ranked player to win on Tour since Zach Johnson at the Hyundai Tournament of Champions.
Kuchar came into Hilton Head ranked seventh (he has moved to fifth) and his win came a week after No. 12 Bubba Watson earned a victory at the Masters. Those back-to-back wins by highly-ranked players put a halt to a wild 12-week stretch in which eight victories were delivered by guys outside the top 75 and only once did a player ranked inside the top 20 (Jason Day, Accenture Match Play) triumph.
