Alabama grabs lead at men's SEC Championship

Alabama, the No. 1 team in the Golfweek/Sagarin Rankings, ran out in front during the first round of the Southeastern Conference Championship, shooting an 8-under 272.

The Crimson Tide, led by senior Bobby Wyatt and freshman Robby Shelton, lead in-state rival Auburn by two strokes at the Sea Island Golf Club's Seaside Course in St. Simons Island, Ga.

Wyatt, the No. 11 individual in Golfweek's rankings, is tied for first after firing a first-round 5-under 65. Wyatt played the first 18 holes bogey free, amassing five birdies along the way.

South Carolina's Matthew NeSmith sits in the top spot with Wyatt. Shelton (T-5) and Cory Whitsett (T-8) are among the top 10 on the leaderboard for Alabama through 18 holes.

Auburn, the No. 24 team, was led by Niclas Carlsson (T-5) and Matt Gilchrest (T-8) to a 6-under 274.

No. 3 Georgia and No. 19 South Carolina are tied for third at 3-under 277. Georgia's Joey Garber, the No. 1 golfer in Golfweek's rankings, shot a 1-under 69 for the Bulldogs and is tied for 11th.

No. 21 Arkansas rounds out the top five after shooting an even-par 280.
