New Mexico men edge UNLV for Mountain West lead

With four golfers in a tie for fifth or better, New Mexico is leading UNLV by one stroke at the Mountain West Conference Championship after the first round.

The Lobos, the No. 22 team in Golfweek's rankings, shot a 5-under 279 through the first 18 holes at Omni Tucson (Ariz.) National.

Andrej Bevins is in a tie for third while Gavin Green, Victor Perez and Sam Saunders are tied for fifth for New Mexico.

No. 28 UNLV, led by Carl Jonson, shot a 4-under 280 as a team. Jonson carded a 5-under 66, taking the individual lead. He made eight birdies and three bogeys, playing the par 5s in 3 under.

No. 35 San Diego State (3 under), Air Force (3 over) and Wyoming (6 over) round out the top five with 36 holes remaining.
