Koepka locks up special temporary status at Zurich
Tuesday, April 29, 2014
Entering the Zurich Classic of New Orleans, Brooks Koepka needed to finish solo 64th or better to receive enough FedEx Cup points to earn special temporary status on the PGA Tour.
Already having used his allotted sponsor exemptions for the year, Koepka Monday-qualified before tying for 21st in New Orleans. The finish gave him the FedEx Cup points he needed, and he now can receive unlimited sponsor exemptions this season.
Koepka used the last of his initial seven sponsor exemptions at the Valero Texas Open, where he tied for 36th and missed locking up special temporary status by two shots.
Jordan Spieth earned special temporary status a season ago before winning the John Deere Classic and qualifying for all four FedEx Cup playoff events.
It's uncertain when Koepka, who turns 24 on May 3, might use his next sponsor exemption. Koepka, a former Florida State standout, won three times last year on the European Challenge Tour to earn his European Tour card. He intends to play a few European Tour events, beginning with the Spanish Open on May 15-18.
