Fox to air Norman’s tournament
Wednesday, April 30, 2014
Greg Norman is more than just the lead golf analyst for Fox Sports. He’s going into business with the network.
Fox Sports will begin broadcasting Norman’s event, the Franklin Templeton Shootout, this December. The tournament will air on Fox and Fox Sports 1, with a Saturday finish to avoid going head to head with NFL games. The tournament aired on Golf Channel last year.
The three-day tournament, now in its 26th year, is held at the Norman-designed Tiburon Golf Club in Naples, Fla. Norman has competed in the event each year, but will focus on his Fox duties this December.
“I’ll be playing the pro-am, but I’ll be concentrating my time in the booth,” said Norman, who will be paired with anchor Joe Buck.
The Franklin Templeton Shootout will give Fox Sports’ new production team a chance to work together before its begins airing U.S. Golf Association events in 2015. Fox Sports’ first USGA event will be the 2015 U.S. Open at Chambers Bay in University Place, Wash.
Mark Loomis, coordinating producer for Fox Sports golf coverage, said most of his team will be together for the first time in June at the U.S. Open, providing nightly recaps on Fox Sports 1. Rehearsals will begin sometime after the Open, but Loomis said no schedule has been set.
Eric Shanks, president and COO of Fox Sports, said that prior to December “we’re going to try to get as much time together for rehearsal and simulation for Joe and Greg as possible. . . . Are we going to have all of the bells and whistles ready by December? No, probably not. But we’re going to have the guys ready.”
