Bogey free, Watney moves to Barracuda lead
Friday, August 1, 2014
On the bubble of reaching the FedEx Cup playoffs, Nick Watney hit the Barracuda Championship this week in search of points.
Thursday the choice appeared to be paying off as his bogey-free opening round earned him 18 points in the tourney's modified Stableford scoring for a two-point lead over Geoff Ogilvy and Tim Wilkinson at Montreux Golf and Country Club.
"You definitely don't want to miss tournaments and not qualify for tournaments," Watney said. "So it's definitely a factor. But if you tee off thinking about that, you probably won't play as well as you should.
Watney carded four birdies on the front and five more on the back against nine pars.
Ogilvy also was bogey free, while Wilkinson atoned for two bogeys with three consecutive birdies on the front and five consecutive on the back.
Martin Laird and Chad Campbell are T-4 with 13 points, while four players are T-6 with 12 points.
