Schauffele could meet Hossler in Western final

Xander Schauffele

CHICAGO – Rematch anyone?

It was Xander Schauffele who took down Beau Hossler in the scheduled 36-hole final of the California Match Play Amateur in mid-July. The rising senior at San Diego State claimed the title on the first extra hole.

Now, since both players advanced to the Western Amateur semifinals, a rematch could be on the horizon Saturday afternoon.

With a little luck in the quarterfinals, Schauffele advanced to his first-ever Western Amateur semifinals with a 3-and-2 victory over Hunter Stewart of Nicholasville, Ken.

“At the Sweet 16 dinner, (on Thursday night) I was a little nieve,” Schauffele explained. “They reviewed the players that have played and won this tournament and what kind of history this tournament has … it means a lot to me.“

Schauffele will face off against Brian Campbell, of Irvine, Calif., in the second semifinal match of the day at The Beverly Country Club on Chicago’s southside. Hossler, a native of Mission Viejo, Calif., a mere 75 miles from San Diego, where Schauffele resides, will play Nick Hardy.

“At this point, it's kind of anyone’s game,” Schauffele said. “Everyone is obviously playing pretty good golf, besides being tied of course, but tired and exhaustion are definitely and will be a factor heading into tomorrow (Saturday).”

If Schauffele and Hossler were to advance to Saturday’s final match, it would be the first time since 2003 that two California natives faced off for the title.

Even though he's playing for himself right now, he would also like his game to continue to excel when he arrives back at school in a few weeks.

“As an individual, I’m having a good summer, actually a great summer,” Schauffele said. “I just have to take the momentum into college, which would be great.”

First things first, Schauffele has his yes on the Western title – and potentially taking down Hossler one more time.
