It took Mizuno six years to develop the concept found in the new JPX-850 Forged irons, which feature boron added to forged carbon steel.

Mizuno says the new material is 30 percent stronger than traditional 1025E steel billets, allowing for a thinner face and improved ball speeds.

Furthermore, the thinner face is reinforced by a Power Frame cavity, placing weight at the extreme corners of the clubhead for maximum forgiveness along with increased distance. Mizuno said added benefits include higher launch and faster ball speeds in the 4-iron through 7-iron. A CNC milled pocket in these irons accentuates the launch angle and ball speed.

The message from Mizuno: Previous JPX Forged irons were long, and the new JPX-850 Forged takes the performance to another level.

These irons are available Sept. 19. The cost of eight clubs (4-iron through gap wedge) is $999.99. The stock shaft is True Temper's XP steel shaft.
