Emily Tubert came out on top, but 102 golfers will advace to Stage II after finishing at 10 over or better at Stage I of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament at Mission Hills Country Club in Rancho Mirage, Calif.
Tubert shot a 12-under 276 through 72 holes, finishing five strokes better than runner-up Annie Park Friday.
Sammi Stevens came in third at 6 under, and Alison Lee and Katherine Perry tied for fourth at 5 under. Park, w USC Trojan, Lee, a UCLA Bruin, were the only amateurs in the top five.
The 102 golfers to advance – everyone who finished 100 or better with ties moves on – will play in Stage II of the LPGA Qualifying Tournament at Plantation Golf and Country Club in Venice, Fla., from Sept. 30 – Oct. 4. At that stage, the top 80 and ties will play to the Final Qualifying Tournaent, which will take place in early December.
Tubert fired a 2-under 70 on Friday, her fourth-straight round under par at the event, to seize the victory.
“It’s a strong field,” Tubert said in a release. “There’s a lot of great players and I think I need to take away a lot of positives and I think I need to allow myself to really believe that I’m great at what I do. Like I’ve said, I struggled a lot with confidence. My last couple of years at college were rough mentally between the ears and I think that finishing 12-under for four days in the heat at first stage of Q-School just proves to me once more that I can hang and play this game at a high level.”
