PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – If the golf course is a splendid arena in which to offer advice and counsel, then there will be the perfect opportunity over the next few days for certain individuals here at the AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am.

For an NFL coach and his quarterback, how perfect is this? Bill Belichick (alongside James Driscoll) and Tom Brady (paired with Ricky Barnes)? They’re in the same foursome, starting at 8:22 Thursday morning, Pacific time, at Spyglass.

For a father and his future son-in-law? The 8:11 group at Spyglass Thursday will feature Wayne Gretzy and his daughter’s future husband, Dustin Johnson, a two-time winner of this event.

For tennis gurus? Well, Andy Roddick (paired with John Mallinger) will be in the same foursome with James Blake (Chris Kirk’s partner).

Those were just some of the pairings that jumped out at you when the draw was revealed for this iconic pro-am. Certainly the Gretzky-Johnson duo is interesting, but what makes it even more so is the team that will complete their foursome: John Daly and Kid Rock.

That eclectic four-ball will be smack in the middle of the “celebrity draw,” meaning they’ll be afforded prime air time on CBS Saturday from Pebble Beach. Brady and Belichick are also in that draw as are Graeme McDowell and his father, paired with Jason Bohn and Chris O’Donnell; Davis Love and Kelly Slater; Jerry Kelly with Aaron Rodgers; will Claxton with Ray Romano; Tommy Gainey with Kurt Russell; Brendan Steele with Andy Garcia; and Trevor Immelman with Don Cheadle.

The defending champion here, Brandt Snedeker, will again team with Toby Wilt. But Condoleezza Rice this year will draw D.A. Points as her partner. (She played alongside Bohn a year ago.)

Interesting, two massive personalities are not in the “celebrity draw.” Phil Mickelson will play Monterey Peninsula Thursday, Pebble Beach Friday then Spyglass on Saturday, alongside Rex Tillerson, the chairman and CEO of ExxonMobil, which sponsors Lefty’s education initiative. And Peyton Manning, a last-minute addition to the field, will play alongside Scott Langley, but their Pebble round will be Friday.

Here are more facts and figures on this week's AT&T Pebble Beach National Pro-Am:

Time and place: Thursday-Sunday, Pebble Beach Golf Links, Monterey Peninsula CC (Shore), Spyglass Hill GC, Pebble Beach, Calif.

At stake: $1,188,000 first prize in $6.6 million purse.

Top ranked players, OWGR: 4. Phil Mickelson, 10. Jason Day, 12. Dustin Johnson, 15. Graeme McDowell, 16. Jordan Spieth, 17. Brandt Snedeker, 21. Jim Furyk. Golfweek/Sagarin: 6. Jason Day, 14. Phil Mickelson, 15. Jim Furyk, 17. Hunter Mahan, 21. Jordan Spieth, 22. Charley Hoffman, 23. Chris Kirk.

Short shots: The tournament will be played on three courses: Pebble Beach Golf Links, Spyglass Hill Golf Club and Monterey Peninsula Country Club. There will be a 54-hole cut with the final round being played at Pebble Beach. . . . Graeme McDowell will partner with his father, Kenny, as he makes his 2014 debut. The last time McDowell played at Pebble Beach was when he won the 2010 U.S. Open. . . . Chris Kirk, who was runner-up to Snedeker a year ago, is in the field. . . . Among the sponsor exemptions for this event are 2013 NCAA individual champion Max Homa and 2013 Asian Tour money winner Kiradech Aphibarnrat. . . . Brandt Snedeker is the defending champion, breaking the tournament scoring record (267) in his victory a year ago.
