Pebble Beach, where the distractions – celebrity partners and the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean – can overshadow some incredible golf.

This week's field has plenty of big names – Phil Mickelson, Jason Day, Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, Graeme McDowell and Hunter Mahan to name a few – and that left our panel of experts going in a few different directions when moving toward a favorite.

Take a look at this week's picks:

• • •

Jeff Rude, senior writer

Favorite: Dustin Johnson

Keep an eye on: Jason Day

Don't forget about: Hunter Mahan

Sleeper: Kevin Stadler

Comments: Johnson is a two-time winner at Pebble (2009-10) and has three other top-8 finishes at Pebble, including the 2010 U.S. Open. Making first start since T-6 at Hyundai Tournament of Champions. … Mahan coming off T-4 at Phoenix and has top-16 finishes his last three times at Pebble, including second three years ago. … Day tied for second at Farmers Insurance Open two weeks ago and has finished sixth twice at Pebble. … Stadler coming off victory at Phoenix and tied for third at Pebble last year.

• • •

Jim McCabe, senior writer

Favorite: Hunter Mahan

Keep an eye on: Patrick Reed

Don't forget about: Nick Watney

Sleeper: Padraig Harrington

Comments: Mahan riding the wave of a T-4 last week and has been inside the top 15 each of last three years in this tournament. Watney is comfortable in his home area, Reed was in contention here a year ago and seemingly is every week he tees it up this season, and Harrington is a gut feeling.

• • •

Adam Schupak, senior writer

Winner: Chris Kirk

Keep an eye on: Graeme McDowell, Dustin Johnson

Don't forget about: Charlie Wi, John Peterson

Sleeper: Chesson Hadley, Russell Knox

Comments: Kirk finished second here a year ago and is having a breakout year, with a first and second already. G-Mac, who won a U.S. Open at Pebble, is teaming with his dad in the pro-am. How cool would it be to contend alongside your pops? Wi has a nice track record in the event (second in 2012, T-16 in '13). Hadley is a rookie with a lot of game, and he finished second at the Callaway Invitational in November at ... wait for it ... Pebble Beach and Spyglass, two of the three courses in the AT&T rota.

• • •

Lance Ringler, senior writer

Favorite: Dustin Johnson

Don’t forget about: Phil Mickelson

Keep an eye on: Pat Perez

Sleeper: Ben Martin

Comments: Johnson has a habit of finishing on the first page of the leaderboard when he plays at Pebble Beach. Johnson is a two-time winner of this event, and there's no reason to think he won’t contend this week. Mickelson also is known to win when his form might suggest otherwise – plus, he has won four times at Pebble. Perez has posted three top-11s in four starts since the beginning of the year and made nine of 11 cuts in this event.

• • •

Nick Masuda, digital director

Winner: Hunter Mahan

Keep an eye on: Phil Mickelson, Graeme McDowell

Don't forget about: Bo Van Pelt

Sleeper: Max Homa

Comments: Mahan came on strong in Phoenix last week, and I think he is highly motivated to make the Ryder Cup squad. A win will likely secure a spot for him. . . . Mickelson was almost my favorite, but the questions about his back scared me off a bit. But the guy loves Pebble Beach. . . . McDowell is an obvious choice after his 2010 U.S. Open win there. . . . Van Pelt is a random choice, I know, but the guy is simply too good to be struggling the way he has. Every player is just looking for momentum, and this will be his week. . . . Homa played collegiately at Cal, so he's seen Pebble a few times. He has lots of game, shown by his top-10 finish at the Frys.com in October.
