Merkel leads Ball State to MAC Match Play title

Tyler Merkel went 3-0 to help Ball State win the 2014 Mid-American Conference Match Play.

The championship bracket at this year's Mid-American Conference Match Play was named after former Ball State coach Earl Yestingsmeier, who died last month.

So it was only fitting that the Cardinals won the title, defeating top-seeded Eastern Michigan, 4-2, in the final match Tuesday at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club in Dade City, Fla.

Ball State's Tyler Merkel won all three of his matches, including his final one over Brett White, 3 and 2.

Xavier took third with a 4-2 win over Eastern Kentucky.
